Dates and Welcome

Wednesday 7th September 2016

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to a new academic year, we hope you have had a lovely restful holiday and are ready for another exciting year.

Over the Summer there have been some significant developments to the school with upgrades to the fabric of the building and more to follow over the term.  We will keep parents informed about the new projects as and when we have information about them, including a new heating system across the school which the Local Authority are leading on in conjunction with the school leadership team and the governing body.

We have also developed a new website over the Summer which has just gone live at www.whittington.herts.sch.uk .  It is a much more user friendly site and the information on it is as up-to-date as we could make it.  Please bear with us as we update parents items such as class pages and the school calendar, we are updating these over this week and next and they will be used much more frequently throughout the year than perhaps has been the case previously.  If you do experience any difficulties with the site please let us know so that we can fix it as soon as possible.

Although the calendar is correct on the site currently, we thought it would be helpful to just remind parents of some of the important up-coming dates; the meet the teacher dates and times were published in the final newsletter of the year but we recognise that a lot can get lost and forgotten over the Summer holiday.  Please find a list below.

  • Meet the teacher meetings: 3.15pm in classrooms:
    • Monday 12th Sept. Y3/4 ,
    • Wednesday 14th Sept. Y1/2,
    • Thursday 15th Sept. Y5/6 – this will be followed by a meeting for Y6 parents about the residential trip in Miss Jameson’s classroom.
  • Tuesday 13th Individual and sibling photographs
  • Wednesday 14th Swimming starts Miss Spence’s Class
  • Monday 26th European Day of Languages
  • Thursday 29th Y3/4 Lincolnsfield Centre Trip

You will be receiving the usual information sheet from teachers which will explain what topics children will be studying over the term.  This will go out next Thursday after the meet the teacher meetings.  Along with this will be a homework sheet.  We have altered slightly the way that homework works and are focussing on spelling and times tables.  We have kept an engagement task on the homework but this will be for the term not half term and there is only one.  Miss Wild in her role as Assistant Head will be discussing with parents your views on homework and its purpose so that we can set homework that is useful, manageable and reflects the school’s needs and those of parents and children.  This will happen over the Autumn term with a view to new homework being issued in Spring.

Finally can I please remind parents that the Reception outside area is a learning environment and not a play area and as such we would request that before and after school it is not used by children to play (this is the whole area and the equipment).  Parking and dogs remain consistent issues, please ensure that you are being considerate to all our families and other local residents.

We are looking forward to building on the really strong progress the school has been making over the last two years and developing new and innovative ways of working.  Thank you for your on-going support.

Yours sincerely
